‘Spirit’ Lyrical analysis: Where’s the Revolution #ModeMarch

Hello guys!

It’s been fun doing the lyrical analysis of ‘Going Backwards’ last night so I decided to make a short series of the Spirit album’s highlights. Like I said earlier, it’s not an easy listening because it’s heavily political and it may go down as the album Mode fans love and hate yet there is so much beauty in it, people expect Depeche Mode to make another ‘Violator’ and it’s time to let go of such idea, to be frankly honest it’s been a while since the band stopped giving many fucks about mainstream success even though they are part of the Sony family these days so to me, it’s all about making music that comes from the heart, something they have to say and they did that with ‘Spirit’, I believe artists must evolve and experiment with their music, who am I to tell my fave what he/she should do? that’s my issue with Mode fans, they are stuck in聽the Violator/SOFAD days and still think Martin Lee Gore is still 30 when homeboy has a lot to say about the world we live in, it’s cool to be radical and have a mind of its own, y’all should try it.

‘Where’s the Revolution’ is a call to start thinking for yourself and question everything you’ve ever known, to take accountability in how we got into this position where the far right is now putting our world at risk. This is not the first time Depeche Mode criticizes capitalism and far right politics, of course the ‘alt-right’ aka white supremacists are gonna put an ‘All lives matter’ to their radical anthems like ‘People are People’ because duh it’s easy to manipulate song lyrics and apply it to your fascist ideals. Now, onto the analysis, these are very blunt lyrics, those Martin is known for so if the shoe fits wear it bitch.

[Verse 1]
You’ve been kept down
You’ve been pushed ‘round
You’ve been lied to
You’ve been fed truths
Who’s making your decisions?
You or your religion
Your government, your countries
You patriotic junkies

First verse is a call to question yourself, do you have a mind of your own or are you letting other people influence on what you have to say? We are tired of being lied with false promises every time a presidential campaign comes, people get seduced and fall easily to it, they are looking a reason to live, also a lot put their privilege first which is exactly what happened last november in the United States, those are the ‘patriotic junkies’ Dave Gahan sings about.

[Chorus]
Where’s the revolution?
Come on, people
You’re letting me down
Where’s the revolution?
Come on, people
You’re letting me down

ICONIC chorus, it may be simple yet catchy as hell! Doesn’t need an exact analysis, enough said.

[Verse 2]
You’ve been pissed on
For too long
Your rights abused
Your views refused
They manipulate and threaten
With terror as a weapon
Scare you till you’re stupefied
Wear you down until you’re on their side

This is exactly how it works, politicians start making promises they cannot keep, you are seduced and manipulated, the purpose is to be on their side even if their policies may affect minorities, anybody who is underprivileged. We know their tactics.

Next song on the album is ‘The Worst Crime’, I will analyze some of the lyrics’ tomorrow for my Hump Day special. Stay tuned
